Seaholm

Competition Brief:
The renvovation of a decommissioned intake building for a previously used power plant into a public space. Our proposal, Austin's Output, was a play on words, yet a serious experiment in public awareness. Our architecture consisted of a rhythmic grid of glass panels which floated above the existing building, preserving the historical exterior. The glass was edge-lit with a red light, with the ability to control color saturation. This light source was then directly linked to the electrical grid of Austin as a real time representation of the amount of energy being consumed by our community. The more clear the glass, the less energy consumption, a metaphor relating to the clarity of our atmosphere. Our goal was to provide a beautiful and sculptural educational and awareness tool for the City of Austin.
